Chris threw hickory nuts, peanuts, pecans, and sunflower seeds out on the patio near the big cage where we kept our pet squirrel, Rompe Techos. Soon other squirrels, red birds, and sparrows gathered for the banquet. We could see them but they couldn't see us through the reflection of the glass door. Some of the squirrels were fat, some skinny, some were young and some were old. A rather large grey squirrel established itself in the center of the feast and threatened those who came too close. These went off a ways and looked back, longingly. The "King of the Mountain" finally relented (a bit grudgingly) and let the others return to eat. Even the sparrow cautiously took its share. All established themselves and ate steadily, occasionally shifting direction but not places. One scrawny little squirrel spent his time, not eating, but carrying nuts to hide in the pine straw underneath the shrubbery. He would stumble across the nuts and eat them...perhaps in a needier time.
There on the patio was being played out a scene that reminded me of the drama of human life...the "rat race" we get caught up in of getting all we can get...eating all we can eat...and perhaps even begrudging others what they get. It wasn't hard for me to identify myself there at that miniature banquet of God's little creatures.
